Kathmandu, December 16 – Prof. Dr. Mohanraj Sharma officially assumed his duties as the newly appointed Dean of the Institute of Medicine (IOM) under Tribhuvan University on Monday, pledging to work in the best interest of the institution without any political bias or external pressure.
During the handover ceremony, former Dean Prof. Dr. Divya Singh Shah, along with faculty members, staff, and students, welcomed Dr. Sharma with warm gestures. Speaking to Health Diary following the ceremony, Dr. Sharma stated that he already has a strategic work plan for operating the institute and will proceed accordingly.
“I am not affiliated with any particular political party; I consider myself a neutral figure,” Dr. Sharma said. “I will work collaboratively with everyone for the betterment of IOM.”
A Consensus Candidate
Prof. Dr. Sharma, a respected neurosurgeon, was chosen from the list of shortlisted candidates after his name emerged without any known political affiliation. As a result, he has been widely viewed as a consensus figure across the political spectrum—something rarely seen in past IOM appointments.
He reassured that there would be no undue political pressure on him during his tenure, and emphasized his commitment to resolving the ongoing challenges at IOM, which he claimed to be well aware of through close observation over the years.
“I have deeply understood the problems within IOM, and I am committed to solving them through inclusive and transparent approaches,” he added.
A Hope for Stability
The appointment of Dr. Sharma has sparked hope for institutional stability and reform at IOM, which in recent years has faced a series of administrative and academic challenges, many exacerbated by political interference in leadership appointments.
With his reputation as a professional with integrity and experience in both clinical and academic sectors, stakeholders now look forward to progressive reforms, including better faculty management, improved infrastructure, and student-friendly policies.
